This does not mean they are flimsy or weak.  The caps and bases can be struck repeatedly with a hammer and suffer little or no damage.       Cap and Base Dimensions Classic Column caps and bases are offered in 4 different sizes and 2 types that are available to meet your project needs. The IPS models are compatible with the IPS PVC Pipe which can be purchased in lengths up to 20 ft. The SWR models are compatible with the SDR 35 PVC pipe that is most often sold in lengths of 13'. NOTE Sometimes the SDR35 pipe is more economical to buy due to its thinner wall thickness. Any project requiring smaller than 13 foot pipe should consider the SDR35. Most times, the SDR35 pipe is green in color which needs be primed and painted just like the white IPS pipe. The prime coat will easily cover the green pipe. PVC Pipe Column Caps and Bases are sold only in sets. Each set includes: 1 Cap and 1 Base.(PVC PIPE can be purchased locally from a waterworks supplier. PVC Cleaner and ABS Adhesive are not included. You can purchase them from your local hardware or plumbing center.) For example: Our 6" column is a full 6 1/2" top to bottom and has the appearance of a tapered 8" column which is about 6 1/2" at the top tapering to 7 1/2 " at the bottom. Our 8" column is a full 8 5/8" top to bottom and has the appearance of a tapered 10" column which is about 8 1/4" at the top tapering to 9 1/2 " at the bottom. Our 10" column is a full 10 3/4" top to bottom and has the appearance of a tapered 12" column which is about 10 1/4" at the top tapering to 11 1/2 " at the bottom.
